It's glassy and round sounding enough, just like you would expect a tube amp would. It's also transparent enough, i. Doesn't color your tone too much, so that it will take your pedals well. Not only that, but the amp has an effects loop on the back!
So you can put your time based effects like delay and chorus through the loop. But if you want to put some overdrives and distortions through this amp, you REALLY don't need to if you don't want to! Go from the clean channel, push in the "crunch" button and you will see why! This amp does overdrive / distortion really well!
It's very muscular, punchy and warm! It's terrific for all kinds of rhythm playing for all kinds of metal, hard rock, and grunge, to name a few. Anything heavy, and this amplifier is made for it... Thus why it, along with the EVH and Peavey 5150, is a staple on many high gain guitarists' rigs! If that wasn't already worth the price of admission, you've got the ultra channel, the Triple X's high gain/lead channel. The best way I can describe it, especially on higher gain levels, is SIZZLING! So not only can you shred your leads and solos to your heart's content, but you can also channel your inner Dimebag Darrell Abbott of Pantera, with the Triple X Ultra channel's searing high end! The peripheral harmonics on this thing are also so amazing!
And with sustain for days! This listing also includes a 2 button Peavey footswitch. I don't think it's the original footswitch intended for this amp, but it is still very useful and makes this amp a powerful channel switching sound machine! The "Select/Effects" button allows you to switch from the clean/crunch channel to the ultra channel.
The only time you're not able to stomp a change is when you need to engage the crunch mode on the clean channel... You can use your finger for that.
On top of that, the reverb switch turns the "volume boost" function (with its own specific control knob on the face of the amp chassis) on and off! So you can punch in and out on leads and solos with ease! Speaking of reverb, this amp has a tank inside, but it doesn't seem to work. It really doesn't bother me as I don't use reverb. Nonetheless, this is one terrific amplifier that will go down as one of the greats!
